He applied for the Panama Railroad Company as Quartermaster and commuted on the SS (Steam Ship) Seguranca and the SS Panama between Boston and Colon. Colon was an important port and trading center on the Caribbean coast of Panama, a cargo port for everything what was needed to build the Panama Canal.The Panama Canal is one of the most important waterways in the world, the shortcut makes it possible for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean in half the time previously required. The work on the Panama Canal began in 1880 and was completed in 1914.
