Gisela had not given up her passion for horses.  She traveled with all three children to the Hoppegartener horse racings in Berlin. There, she could place so many bets on so many horses, until she was  blank.

Then she had to call  the Hopfenstock and wait for a telegraphic money order, to get back home.

Carefree Childhood

Two years later after Edith was born, Anton Fritz Funk  entered the world. The new heir would one day step into his father's footsteps, and make everything what the parents and grandparents had built up, even more beautiful and better.

But it turned out quite differently

The two children, Edith, and Fritz had a carefree childhood. Actually there were three children who were inseparable. Cousin Ernie was either with the siblings in the hotel, or they were at Erni‘s home  in Giesshübel. In In the off season in winter, the puppet theater was set  up; Gisela had brought with her enormous many matching scenes and figures from England .

Aunt Lotte, who was an actress  in her heydays, participated with enthusiasm in the puppetry.

She had an incredibly thick dachshund. She strapped a leather belt around his waist with wheels so that he could move . Although the animal was so fat, she called on it constantly to still swallow down some more little bites. Except for the puppet theater she was not  acting anymore, but she had kept the laurel wreath from  better days,. She liked to cook. If a recipe like stew called for laurels as a spice, she plucked a few bay leaves from her wreath and gave them into the dish.

The family spent the holidays on the Baltic Sea in Graal or in  the Mediterranean, in Grado.

On the Baltic Sea there was a shop, in which the children were allowed to browse and buy something. Hans had agreed in advance with the owner of the shop, what children were allowed to buy. He painted or wrote objects on a sheet of paper and folded it. The children could now draw on the paper like a deck of cards. When the children recognized the object, they could buy it with their "paper money" and take it home.

Graal

Zwei Jahre später kam Anton Fritz Funk zur Welt.

Der neue Erbe würde einmal in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters steigen, und alles, was die Eltern und Großeltern aufgebaut hatten, noch schöner und besser machen.

Aber es kam ganz anders.

Die beiden Kinder Edith und Fritz hatten eine unbeschwerte Kindheit. Eigentlich waren es drei Kinder, die unzertrennlich waren. Cousine Erni war entweder bei den Geschwistern im Hotel, oder sie waren bei Erni in Giesshübel.

In der Nebensaison im Winter wurde das Marionettentheater aufgestellt; Gisela hatte enorm viele dazu passende Kulissen und Figuren aus England mitgebracht. Tante Lotte, die in ihrer Glanzzeit Schauspielerin war, beteiligte sich mit Begeisterung an dem Puppenspiel.

Sie besaß einen ungeheuer dicken Dackel, dem sie einen Lederriemen mit Rollen um den Bauch schnallte, damit er sich weiterbewegen konnte. Obwohl das Tier so fett war, forderte sie es ununterbrochen auf, doch noch ein kleines Häppchen hinunter zu schlucken.

Außer beim Marionettentheater schauspielerte sie nicht mehr, aber den Lorbeerkranz aus besseren Tagen hatte sie aufgehoben. Sie kochte gerne. Wenn ein Rezept wie Beuschel Lorbeeren als Gewürz verlangte, zupfte sie ein paar Lorbeerblätter aus ihrem Kranz und gab sie in die Speise.

Die Familie verbrachte die Ferien an der Ostsee oder in Grado am Mittelmeer

An der Ostsee gab es ein Geschäft, in welchem die Kinder einkaufen durften. Hans hatte vorher mit dem Besitzer des Geschäftes vereinbart, was die Kinder kaufen durften. Er malte oder schrieb Gegenstände auf ein Blatt Papier und faltete es. Die Kinder durften nun an den Papieren ziehen wie an einem Deck Karten. Dann liefen sie damit zum Geschäft. Wenn sie den Gegenstand erkannten, durften sie ihn mit dem „Papiergeld” einlösen und mit nach Hause nehmen.

1914, when Gisela was eighteen years of age, she gave birth to my mother Edith. Despite loosing a big chunk of his estates, grandfather Anger gave Edith a nice little villa in Neurohlau as a gift for baptism.

Gisela became an efficient partner in the hotel business.  Right in the early morning she went with chef- cook Fritz, called Uncle Pips, buying  fresh fruits, salads, vegetables, flowers and everything else what was fresh on the market.
Asparagus and special flowers llike orchids, carnations or roses  were flown in from Nice.
Later, when the dining rooms opened, she sat on an elevated podium and had one last check at the food , before the waiters rushed into the hall to serve the meal to their guests. Uncle Pips put together several menus: cold plates, chicken in aspic, pates, lobster, caviar, oysters, tongue, smoked salmon,  steaks, roast pork, beef -or pork-olives, „Rehrücken“,“Tafelspitz“ with horseradish, casseroles, various sauces and mayonnaises were not missing.
Before the meal you could order a soup in a cup with anchovy bread, for dessert different  creams, wine jelly, tutti frutti and cakes. 

Uncle Pip's specialty was baked ice cream. And of course a selection of the best wines, liquors, foreign and domestic beers at every meal were included.

Gisela war achtzehn Jahre alt, als sie meine Mutter Edith 1914 zur Welt brachte. Großvater Anger schenkte Edith zu ihrer Taufe eine kleine Villa in Neurohlau.

 

Gisela wächst in den Hotelbetrieb hinein. Gleich in der Früh fährt sie auf den Markt und kauft mit Onkel Fritz, Onkel Pips genannt, frisches Obst, Salat, Gemüse, Blumen  und was es  sonst noch alles frisch auf dem Markt gibt, ein.

Spargel wird von Nizza eingeflogen.

Später dann, wenn die Speisesäle geöffnet werden, sitzt sie auf einem erhöhten Podium  bei einer Flügeltüre die sich zwischen dem Kücheneingang und dem ersten Speisesall befindet und überwacht alles: wie sich der Speisesaal füllt oder leert, ob die Kellner auch nett und adrett angezogen sind. Jeder Keller, der aus der Küche kommt, reicht ihr einen Zettel mit seinem Namen und den Speisen, die er gerade aus der Küche balanciert. Sie wirft noch einen letzten routinierten  Blick auf das Essen, dann eilen sie in den  Saal, um die Mahlzeit ihren  Gästen zu servieren.

Onkel Pips stellte mehrere Menues zusammen, kalte Pastete, Geflügel in Gelee, Rehrücken und andere Arten, Kaviar, Austern, Zunge, verschiedene Mayonnaisen und geräucherter Lachs durften nicht fehlen.

Vor dem Essen gab es Bouillon in Tassen mit Sardellenbrötchen, als Dessert wurden die verschiedensten Cremes, Weingelle, tutti Frutti und auflauf angeboten.

 

Onkel Pips Spezialität war gebackenes Eis. Selbstverständlich gehörten die erlesendsten Weine , Liköre, ausländische und inländische Biersorten zu jeder Mahlzeit.

In the winter half-year 1912-1913 were, as in the Karlsbad Badeblatt-News announced, "the ground floor locations" of the Kur Restaurant Hopfenstock closed due to renovations: But the the dining salon in the upper floor of the upper house remained  open. After about three months, the work was completed, because with a large display owner Franz Funk recommends hotel and restaurant to  the highly honored public for  „kindly“ visits. Culinary cuisine, Diners, Soupers, fine wines and beers are available.

"DIABETICS complete lunch and dinner" it says in the  paper.

 And in the evening there is nothing "reheated", but always freshly prepared food.

The hotel has 70 comfortably furnished rooms, equipped with good heating systems for the coming summer and winter season. Electric light, telephone, elevators, bathrooms and spas are already installed.

The hotel had three dining rooms. The guests went  to a show before or after the dinnner, the restaurant was well known for its excellent cuisine.

Han‘s brother Fritz was chef and retained this position in the Hopfenstock for the next 25 years. Other employees could  also celebrate their 25 to 30 anniversary.
The head waiter, Mr. Walther, proudly reported, that with the money he earned during the 30 year of serving, he could afford to build a house and was able to send his son to university.
 

Chef Fritz collected over a lengthy period of time Soup Labels from OXO. They always consisted of a series of 6 pictures of various themes.

Im Winterhalbjahr 1912-1913 waren, wie im Karlsbader Badeblatt angekündigt, "die Parterre Lokalitäten" des Kur Reataurants Hopfenstock wegen renovierungsarbeiten geschlossen: geöffnet blieben aber der Speisesalon im Oberen Stock des Oberen Hauses.

Nach rund drei Monaten waren die Arbeiten abgeschlossen, denn mit einer großen Anzeige empfiehlt Besitzer Franz Funk Hotel und Reataurant "dem Hochgeehrten Publikum zu gütigem Besuche.

Das Hotel Hopfenstock hatte drei Speisesäle. Die Gäste, die ins Theater gingen, konnten vor oder nach dem Theaterbesuch eine gute Mahlzeit zu sich nehmen, der Hopfenstock war bekannt für seine ausgezeichnete Küche.

Kräftige, Kurgemäße Küche, Diners, Soupers, feine Weine und Biere werden angeboten. Auch für Diabetiker ist gesorgt. "Zuckerkranke kompletter Mittags-und Abendtisch" heißt es in oiger Anzeige. Und abends gibt e nichts "Aufgewärmtes", sondern stets frsche Küche. Das Hotel verfügt über 70 komfortabel eingerichtete Zimmer, versehen mit guten Heizanlagen für die kommende Sommer-und Wintersaison. Es gibt bereits elektrisches Licht, Telephon, Lift und Bäder.

Hans Bruder Fritz wird Chefkoch und behält diese Position im Hopfenstock für die nächsten 25 Jahre. Auch andere Bedienstete können ihr 25 bis 30 jähriges Dienstjubiläum feiern,

Der Oberkellner, Herr Walther, berichtet stolz, daß er sich mit dem Geld, das er während der 30 jährigen Dienszeit im Hopfenstock verdiente, ein Haus leisten und seinen Sohn auf die Universität schicken konnte.

Gisela was just sixteen years of age, Hans was twenty-five when they got married.
Their honeymoon took them to Egypt. After the magnificent wedding the young couple traveled to Egypt. Egypt was the preferred destination for the elevated class.You must have been in Egypt.

People  traveled to Egypt, or came from Egypt. For this journey the Mediterranean Sea had to be crossed. They  embarked at the port of Trieste,  and left the ship in the harbor of Cairo.

Gisela war gerade sechzehn Jahre alt, Hans war fünfundzwanzig, als sie heirateten.

Nach der glanzvollen Hochzeit reiste das junge Brautpaar nach Ägypten. Ägypten war das bevorzugte Reiseziel der gehobenen Klasse. Man mußte in Ägypten gewesen sein. Alle reisten nach Ägypten, oder kamen von Ägypten. Dabei mußte das Mittelmeer überquert werden. Man schiffte sich im Hafen von Triest ein und verließ das Schiff im Hafen von Kairo.

The oldest daughter was Gisela, my grandmother.

A lot of emphasis was placed on well-maintained good manners, she was a real little lady.She also learned how to make a good figure in the saddle, And horses have been her greatest, lifelong passion.

My daughter Veronika had a yellowed photo of Gisela for years attached to her refrigerator door. It showed Gisela on a beautiful rap in the former ladies-seat.

I didn’t know her name but had her picture on my fridge for years. I knew her as “Great grandma”, from where I must have gotten my obvious love for horses.

The picture shows her sitting on a beautiful black horse. The rider is in control and looks very comfortable and sure of herself. She looks focused on the person taking the picture. She is sitting  side-saddle so easily as a child would sit on a pony. She is dressed in a long skirt which flows over the left side of her horse. Her top coat is buttoned with a white blouse peeking out of it. It looks like she has a scarf tied around her head to hold back her curly hair and keep her ears warm.

She is very relaxed and is enjoying the experience. Her hands are laid easily by her knee where her leg is balancing on the horses withers in the saddle. She has control of the horse without pulling on him, and the horse looks very happy and calm. He is giving in to the bit and relaxing into her hand. He looks very soft in the mouth and only good quiet hands will achieve such a result.

I imagine that she could easily jump streams and fences with the horse she was riding. She looks so in control and confident. I look at her and think of Mona Lisa. She is smiling that smile like she is pleased about something and we don’t know her secret. She must have been a complete outdoor person because the weather looks like it was cold on that day, yet she seems completely unaware of it. She is ready to ride, sitting tall and elegant in the saddle. The horse must make her feel like she can fly and they are looking to spread their wings.

I am grateful that some things transcend generations and her love for horses carried over to me.

It is  a passion that feeds the soul. I hope it did that for her.

Es wurde viel Wert auf gepflegte Manieren und gute Umgangsformen gelegt; sie lernte auch im Sattel eine „gute Figur“ zu machen, sie war eine richtige kleine Lady.

Und Pferde  wurden ihre größte, lebenslange Leidenschaft.

Ich hatte eine vergilbte Fotografie von Gisela  auf ihrem Pferd sitzend, gefunden; und gab sie meiner Tochter Veronika,die genauso  eine  Urgroßmutter, eine Pferdenärrin. Ich bat sie, nachdem sie am ehesten wußte, wie man auf einem Pferd eine „gute Figur“ mache, Gisela zu beschreiben.

Wie Veronika ihre Urgroßmutter Gisela sieht:

Meine Urgroßmutter Gisela begleitete mich schon viele Jahre. Von ihr mußte ich meine offensichtliche Liebe zu Pferden geerbt haben.

Das Pferd und sie, sie und das Pferd verschmelzen zu einer Einheit, wie es nur ganz wenigen Reitern jemals gelingt, entspannt, kräftig, selbstbewußt.

Sie trägt einen langen Mantel, der über die linke Flanke des Rappens fließt. Unter dem Mantel blitzt eine hochgeschlossene weiße Bluse mit Kragen hervor. Um den Kopf hat sie einen Schal gewickelt, der die kräftigen Locken bändigen und die Ohren warm halten soll. Gisela schaut in die Richtung der Kamera, den Kopf leicht schräg geneigt, was ihr etwas verletzliches, kindliches verleiht, so wie ein Kind auf einem Pony sitzt. Trotzdem vermittelt sie den Eindruck absoluter Kontrolle über das Pferd. Das Pferd hält den Kopf leicht gesenkt in der Trense wie nur gute, ruhige Hände es zustande bringen. Sie sitzt aufrecht und straff im Sattel.

Das Pferd muß ihr das Gefühl geben Flügel zu haben und die beiden machen sich gerade auf, diese auszubreiten um davonzufliegen. Leicht vorstellbar, daß sie ganz einfach über Zäune und Bäche springen könnten. 

Sie war wohl ein Kind der Natur, weil das Wetter an dem Tag eher kühl und regnerisch wirkt, was ihr aber gar nichts auszumachen scheint.

Ich sehe sie und denke an Mona Lisa. Dasselbe rätselhafte Lächeln, als wäre sie von etwas entzückt, was nur sie sehen kann. Wir werden ihr Geheimnis nie erraten.

Ich bin dankbar, daß einige Dinge über Generationen hinweg ihren Weg finden und daß ihre Liebe zu Pferden auf mich übertragen worden ist. Diese Leidenschaft ist Balsam für die Seele.

Ich hoffe, daß es für sie dieselbe Bedeutung hatte.
